Some stories
refuse to end.
Questions from readers, characters who linger, and stories that may still be waiting to be told.
Begin with Ray ↓The question readers keep asking
What happened
to Ray?
Ray enters Daniel’s life only at intervals, but his presence carries unusual weight. He is one of the few men who sees what Daniel is enduring and offers protection without making the boy feel weak.
He takes Daniel fishing and includes him in ordinary errands. He tells him, “You’re fine.” When a boundary must be drawn, Ray does not make a performance of it. He simply steps between Daniel and the danger and says what no one else will say.
Ray also carries wounds of his own. His service in Korea follows him home, leaving him watchful, tired, and emotionally distant—a man whose body returned long before some part of him did.
The novel does not tell us where the rest of Ray’s life led. His later years remain outside the frame of Daniel’s story. That absence is precisely why so many readers have continued to wonder about him.

Inside the novel
He did not rescue Daniel with speeches. He gave him something rarer: the feeling that, for a little while, someone capable was paying attention.
Ray’s quiet protection makes him memorable because it stands in contrast to the instability surrounding Daniel. He is not without flaws or damage. He is simply a man who recognizes a child’s fear and refuses to add to it.
Behind the character
The life behind
the shadow.
Ray is a fictional character, not a literal biography. Like much of The Name They Gave Me, however, he was shaped by emotional truth and inspired in part by a real relative whose life was every bit as complicated as fiction.
That life included military service, geology, and wildcatting in the oil business—fortunes made, fortunes lost, success reclaimed, and loss encountered again. It was a story of ambition, risk, reinvention, family complications, and the price that can accompany a life lived at full speed.
The real story extends far beyond Ray’s role in Daniel’s life. It belongs to another time, another landscape, and perhaps another book.
A story still unfolding
Ray may not have
said his last word.
I am beginning to consider whether the remarkable life that helped inspire Ray might become the foundation for a future novel. I am not yet ready to say where that story will lead—but the questions readers have asked may have opened a door.

Every ending leaves
something behind.
Beyond the Last Page will grow as readers raise new questions and as future stories begin to take shape. For now, it begins where so many conversations about the novel have begun: with Ray.
